Weirding out any number of patrons

Saturday, September 12th, 2009

This has been an unlucky week for my wallet. I accidentally knocked off my driver’s side-view-mirror, which will probably cost me $300-400 to replace, and received two $38 parking tickets (one which I didn’t realize I had been in error and am paying uncontested; the other I disagree with and am fighting). Then I was at the Apple store because my DVD drive has been on the fritz… they informed me to my surprise that my AppleCare hadn’t expired and they would replace it for free. Just as I was thinking to myself “hooray, I’ve probably saved about two hundred bucks”, I lost my grip on my phone and in less than a second its face shattered on the floor (their stone tiling was apparently more rugged than the InvisibleSHIELD cover it wore). A replacement cost me two hundred bucks. Then I made it home and found a ticket in my mail from a red light camera that depicts me doing a rolling right turn… $124 if I decide to pay it, although I think I may fight it. All in all one of the most unintentionally expensive weeks I’ve had… I can afford it, but I can’t afford too many more weeks like it. It feels like the world is nickel-and-dimeing me to death… I’m trying to avoid spending excessively but it’s hard.

In that vein, I just ordered a wall mount for my television, something I’ve been thinking of getting for quite a while and was on sale for only $26 (so how could I resist?). I’m a little nervous because these things need to be properly secured to a stud, and I’ve never been too trusting of my stud finder. So I may have to spend more money on a better stud finder as well. Sigh.

The creation myth of how I got my hair style is short but interesting if you’re one of the many legions of fans I like to believe I have. I’ve always hated my hair since I was old enough to care about what girls thought of me… if I let it behave naturally it parts in a way that makes me look like I’m in third grade. In high school I tried gelling it back but didn’t really know what I was doing and it just made it look stupid. In university I wound up giving up entirely and shaved my head for several years (I was repeatedly told I had a “good head” for shaving). I eventually let it grow back out again and returned to gelling it back, but never liked it.

Then shortly after I moved to New York City, I found myself commuting home on the subway one day when I saw someone with hair straight forward but gelled up to be spiky in the front, and thought to myself, “hey, I could do that with my hair.” So I proceeded to stare intently at the top of his head for the entire half-hour subway ride, burning the image into my brain and quite possibly weirding out any number of patrons. The next morning I whipped out some gel and attempted to sculpt what I remembered. To my surprise it worked and – in my humble opinion – actually looked good on me. I’ve since worn it or variants of it depending on the length of my hair, and been pretty content with it.

I’m right now at the length where I would normally chop it back down again, but on the recommendations of some ladies I trust I’ve been piloting out something new, which is letting my hair grow long and just flop forward without any gel. I must confess I’m not very comfortable with it… it seems dumb-looking to me, but I’ve already had a few compliments, so I’m giving it a shot. I don’t know if I have the willpower to stick it out, though. Change is so very scary.

We had our first couple of rehearsals for Cannibal this week. It looks like it’s going to be fun, but it’s hard to get past what a deliberately dumb show it is. Our rehearsal period is very short – we only have twelve on the schedule, and just about everyone except myself is going to be absent from a bunch of them – so I just hope we don’t wind up turning the quality of the script into an excuse for the quality of our performance. It’s far too soon for me to be making any assumptions there, though.

In the world of improv, it seems I can’t get cast in a Theatresports show lately. Granted my schedule hasn’t been as open as usual and there have apparently been a lot of teams calling in (which is the preferred route to getting cast), but I still feel a bit slighted. Both last night and tonight I did the 8:30 show, though, which is just short form with the new apprentices to the company, and they were both a lot of fun, and the apprentices are a very solid bunch. It’s amazing how much I miss doing improv after being absent only for a while.

After a week of cool, damp and thoroughly mediocre weather today was a beautifully hot and sunny Saturday. The meteorologists are calling it “summer’s last hurrah”. If I had faith in higher powers I would think they used this week to set us up to appreciate it. One of my more enterprising friends thought to have a barbecue at the Golden Gardens beach, and while I could only attend for about an hour it was a good time and a chance to get caught up with some old friends from Griptonite. I miss those folks, and I will miss summer.

Packed with more flaws than features

Monday, May 25th, 2009

It’s been an adventuresome holiday weekend. Friday night my team won at Theatresports for the third week, although I felt like we underperformed in general. The audience seemed to have a good time, though, so at least we didn’t do them a disservice. I don’t feel like my improv was anywhere near as lame as it was last week, but it’s been a while since I’ve had a show where I felt like I genuinely kicked ass, and I’m itching to have that happen again.

All weekend long we had hot, gorgeous summer-like weather. It was perfect for my barbecue on Saturday, which went quite well by and large, with a good cross-section of friends from theatre and various workplaces. After the barbecue I went and performed improv down the street at SecondStory, which was unremarkable but fun. Afterwards a bunch of people wound up coming back to my place for an impromptu karaoke party, including a bunch of people I’d never met before who were coworkers of one of my friends. All told it was a massively exhausting and teriffically fun day.

Sunday we had a photo shoot for Fiddler in the afternoon, which meant spending large amounts of time outdoors at the park in our costumes (mine looks like a cross between a 1920′s paperboy and a pirate). It was nice to get to be outdoors on such a fantastic day, although the shoot itself was tiring and as usual I look silly beyond measure. We were late for rehearsal because of it, and both yesterday’s and tonight’s rehearsal were stressed as we are less than two weeks from opening.

My new GPS arrived on Thursday, and I’ve been having fun experimenting with it. It took me almost no time to purchase the Doc Brown voice and get it installed on it, so now I have him barking directions while cautioning me to be careful not to run into my future self. I’m generally not a fan of these in-car machines – I think they’re poorly designed and packed with more flaws than features – but I’m absurdly bad at navigating around Seattle and I know if I don’t have something like this I’ll try using my iPhone with its maps instead, and that’s just dangerous.

The last big question mark at work with my project seems to have finally been cleared out of the way, so we are now full steam ahead towards the finish line. Unfortunately that line is a lot closer than where it should ideally be, so it’s going to be a tough push for everyone, but for me especially with Fiddler opening so soon. But I’d rather be busy than bored!

Audition season

I’ve obtained a photo of me in my new suit:

… Dashing.

This past weekend was hectic as a friend was visiting from Edmonton. We ran around the city doing and eating far too much. I performed at Theatresports and it was okay, although the energy was a bit weird in a way we couldn’t quite explain afterwards. I also attended what was hopefully my last wedding this summer… it was beautiful and the ceremony was (mercifully, in the summer heat without air conditioning) about the shortest I’ve ever seen.

My attempts at getting the iPhone have failed miserably so far. I went on launch day only to witness a line of several hundred people that apparently was taking as long as six hours for people to get through, and I was having none of that (although I did know three people in the line who were apparently much more dedicated than myself). I thought I stood a decent shot this morning as I returned from dropping my friend off at the airport… but after an hour and a half in line and being second to the front I was informed that they were all out, which was quite a bit infuriating as they kept insisting they didn’t know how many they had left but when the final answer is sixteen they are either deliberately misleading you or grossly incompetent. There’s talk that they might be getting more by Wednesday. My patience is wearing thin, though… I’m sick of my Ocean.

I grabbed a bunch of pictures taken from the last few hours of the Improvathon and added them to my gallery. Unfortunately I don’t have a more complete selection available. I’m hoping to get galleries online of other shows I’ve done as well… Damn Yankees, Urinetown and the like. Dredging up photos is hard, though.

I was feeling kind of ill today but I think I’m better now. It’s probably from all the sun, food and activity over the weekend. My stomach still hurts a bit though… bleagh.

We’ve been having some beautiful weather. I hope it lasts a while longer.

It’s audition season, and I have an audition every week for the next three weeks (including this one). Depending on how I do at them, I may have three callbacks as well in the final week. I’m also pre-invited to a callback in August. It’s all so much stuff… I’m almost as scared of getting cast as I am of not getting cast.

All anyone can ask for

I’ve been tinkering with this blog and its features, and have tricked it out with a bunch of plug-ins and even already created my own (for the random tagline at the top of this blog). I’m considering developing a plug-in that would let me make private, friends-only posts a la LiveJournal but I don’t know yet if it’d be worth the effort.

I’ve installed a plug-in that lets me embed photos from my gallery… let’s try it out with the ducks from last post:

Hm, not bad. And so very cute!

We’ve finally broken into the hot, hot summer weather that I both welcome and deplore. It’s gorgeous out but it’s hard to keep my condo from getting stuffy without air conditioning.

This past weekend was a good one for improv. Saturday I did three shows in a row… the first was kind of mediocre but a good lesson in the importance of reading your audience and playing to what they’re looking for, and not just going through the motions of your repertoire. The second was another Spoken longform, and easily one of the more successful and entertaining ones I’ve been involved in. Then Theatresports that night wasn’t exceptional but was just plain fun both for the performers and the audience, which is all anyone can ask for.

Sunday I had rehearsal with SecondStory for their improv show, and I was given numerous opportunities to show some leadership and for us to actually work instead of just play, which was nice. Then that evening we had the Dust-Up, an exciting new monthly event where improvisers from all around Seattle are randomly thrown into teams together and given the chance to do whatever form of improv they please, so long as it’s a form they’ve invented right there on the spot. Extremely cool.

I managed to get a DVD of the production of Urinetown that I was in. I want to share clips from it but I don’t think I can safely/legally post it on YouTube. I am looking into a way around this…
